If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your driveway, patio, or backyard with pavers, you’re not alone. Pavers are one of the most requested services we handle at HQ Remodeling — and for good reason. They’re durable, beautiful, low maintenance, and they add real value to your home.
But before you start, there are a lot of questions homeowners typically have. What type of pavers should I choose? How long does installation take? How much does it cost? Do I need a permit?
This guide answers all of it — clearly and honestly — so you can make the right decision for your home.

What Are Pavers and Why Are They So Popular?
Pavers are individual units — made from concrete, natural stone, or brick — that are laid in a pattern to create a surface. Unlike poured concrete or asphalt, pavers are installed as separate pieces, which gives them several big advantages:
- If one paver cracks or stains, you replace just that piece — not the entire surface
- They flex slightly with the ground, which means fewer cracks over time
- They come in dozens of colors, shapes, and textures to match any style
- They drain better than solid concrete, which matters in California’s occasional heavy rain seasons
- They dramatically improve curb appeal and property value
In Orange County’s climate, pavers are especially practical. The combination of dry heat, occasional rain, and expansive soil means poured concrete often cracks within a few years. Pavers hold up significantly better over time.

Types of Pavers: Which One Is Right for You?
Choosing the right paver material is the most important decision in the process. Here’s a breakdown of the most common options:
Concrete Pavers
The most popular choice for Orange County homeowners. Concrete pavers are manufactured in a wide range of colors and styles, they’re very durable, and they’re the most cost-effective option. They can be made to look like natural stone, brick, or wood at a fraction of the price.
Best for: Driveways, patios, pool decks, backyard entertainment areas.
Travertine Pavers
A natural stone option that has a timeless, elegant look. Travertine is naturally cool to the touch, which makes it perfect for pool surrounds and areas where you walk barefoot. It’s slightly more expensive than concrete but adds a premium feel.
Best for: Pool decks, patios, outdoor entertaining spaces.
Flagstone Pavers
Large, irregular natural stone pieces that create a very organic, natural look. Flagstone works beautifully in garden pathways and rustic outdoor spaces.
Best for: Garden paths, accent areas, natural landscape designs.
Brick Pavers
Classic and timeless. Brick pavers have a warm, traditional look and are extremely durable. They’re a great choice for driveways and front entry areas where you want strong curb appeal.
Best for: Driveways, front entries, traditional-style homes.

The 4 Main Paver Applications
1. Driveway Pavers
Your driveway is one of the first things people notice about your home. A paver driveway immediately upgrades curb appeal and adds significant value. Unlike asphalt, which fades and cracks, or poured concrete, which requires full replacement when damaged, paver driveways are built to last decades with minimal maintenance.
What to know:
- A standard two-car driveway is typically 400 to 600 square feet
- Proper base preparation is critical — this is where most DIY projects fail
- In most Orange County cities, driveway replacement does not require a permit, but check with your city to confirm
- Installation typically takes 3 to 5 days for a standard driveway
2. Patio Pavers
A paver patio transforms your backyard into an actual living space. Whether you want a simple seating area or a full outdoor entertainment zone with a built-in BBQ and fire pit, pavers are the foundation that makes it all work.
What to know:
- Patio size varies widely — from a small 200 sq ft seating area to a full 1,000+ sq ft entertainment space
- Pavers can be combined with other elements like pergolas, outdoor kitchens, and water features
- The pattern and layout of the pavers affects both the look and the cost
- A well-designed patio can effectively add a full room to your home’s usable space
3. Backyard Pavers
Full backyard paver projects are among the most transformative remodels we do. An overgrown or plain grass backyard becomes a polished, functional outdoor living area. Many homeowners combine a paver patio, a grass area, planters, and a side yard all in one project.
What to know:
- This is where design matters most — the layout needs to be planned carefully
- Drainage must be factored into the design, especially for larger backyards
- Combining pavers with artificial turf is a very popular combination in Orange County
- A complete backyard transformation typically takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on scope
4. Pool Deck Pavers
The area around your pool takes more abuse than almost any other surface — constant water, sun, bare feet, and pool chemicals. Pavers handle all of it better than any alternative. They stay cooler than concrete in direct sun, they don’t crack from pool chemistry, and they look stunning.
What to know:
- Travertine and concrete pavers are the most popular choices for pool decks
- Non-slip texture is important — always confirm the paver finish is appropriate for wet areas
- Pool deck pavers typically require a permit in most Orange County cities
- Resurfacing an existing pool deck with pavers is a very common and cost-effective upgrade
How Much Does Paver Installation Cost in Orange County?
Paver installation cost depends on the size of the project, the material chosen, and the complexity of the design. Here are general ranges to give you a realistic expectation:
Standard concrete pavers: $18 to $25 per square foot installed Travertine or natural stone: $25 to $40 per square foot installed Brick pavers: $20 to $30 per square foot installed
These prices include materials, labor, base preparation, and cleanup. They do not include demo of existing concrete or asphalt, which adds cost depending on the scope.
A typical project breakdown:
- Small patio (200 sq ft): $3,600 to $5,000
- Standard driveway (500 sq ft): $9,000 to $12,500
- Full backyard (800 sq ft): $14,400 to $20,000

The Paver Installation Process: Step by Step
Here’s exactly what happens when HQ Remodeling installs pavers at your home:
Step 1 — Site Assessment and Design We visit your property, take measurements, assess drainage and soil conditions, and discuss your design preferences. We’ll recommend the right paver type and pattern for your specific space.
Step 2 — Demo and Excavation Existing concrete, asphalt, or soil is removed to the required depth. For pavers to last, the ground underneath must be properly excavated — typically 6 to 8 inches deep for driveways, 4 to 6 inches for patios.
Step 3 — Base Preparation This is the most important step. A compacted gravel base is installed and leveled precisely. A poorly prepared base is the number one reason paver projects fail — pavers sink, shift, or become uneven. We never skip this step.
Step 4 — Sand Bedding Layer A layer of coarse sand is spread over the base and screeded to a perfectly flat surface. This is what the pavers sit on and it allows for minor adjustments during installation.
Step 5 — Paver Installation Pavers are laid in the chosen pattern, cut to fit edges and curves with precision saws. Every paver is set by hand and checked for level as we go.
Step 6 — Edge Restraints Plastic or concrete edge restraints are installed around the perimeter to hold the pavers in place permanently and prevent spreading over time.
Step 7 — Compaction and Sand Jointing The entire surface is compacted with a plate compactor to lock everything in place. Fine joint sand is swept into the gaps between pavers and compacted again. Some projects use polymeric sand, which hardens and resists weeds and insects.
Step 8 — Sealing (Optional) Sealing is not required but recommended. A quality sealer enhances the color, protects against staining, and makes maintenance much easier. We typically recommend sealing 30 to 60 days after installation.
How to Maintain Your Pavers
One of the biggest advantages of pavers is how easy they are to maintain. Here’s what you need to know:
Regular cleaning: A simple rinse with a garden hose keeps pavers looking fresh. For deeper cleaning, a mild soap and a stiff brush works well. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Pressure washing: Once a year, a light pressure wash removes dirt, algae, and buildup. Don’t use maximum pressure — it can dislodge the joint sand.
Weed control: Weeds occasionally grow in the joints. Polymeric sand significantly reduces this. If weeds appear, pull them out or use a targeted weed killer — never a blanket spray that can stain the pavers.
Replacing damaged pavers: If a paver cracks or stains beyond cleaning, it can be individually removed and replaced. This is one of the biggest advantages over poured concrete — repairs are simple and invisible.
Re-sealing: If you sealed your pavers at installation, plan to re-seal every 3 to 5 years depending on sun exposure and foot traffic.

Do You Need a Permit for Paver Installation in Orange County?
It depends on the city and the scope of the project:
- Driveway pavers: Generally no permit required in most Orange County cities, but some cities require approval for changes to the driveway apron (the section between the sidewalk and street).
- Patio and backyard pavers: Usually no permit required unless you’re also building a structure (pergola, patio cover) at the same time.
- Pool deck pavers: Typically requires a permit in most Orange County cities.
- Any project involving drainage changes: May require review regardless of city.
